To members and friends of St. James United Church of Christ . . .
. . . getting ready for Sunday, October 18, 2009
First off: it’s Church School time again… and that means Adult Discussion time as well… so…
- For pre-schoolers through 5th grade there will be stories around the general theme that God is with us in difficult times… with some more about the story of Joseph and his brothers and how there was some jealousy and that it led to some really difficult times . . .
- And with Adult Discussion Time we’re going to get into the book by Bernhard Anderson, The Unfolding Drama of the Bible. And as the book notes in the introduction: You don’t need to be a convinced Christian “before anything can be gotten out of the study of the Bible. The only condition for fruitful Bible study is that you come with an infinite concern about the question – ‘What is the meaning of my life, and the historical crisis in which I and my community are involved?’”
That will be our starting point… and Eirik Harteis will lead us through that intro and into Study 1 on “Prologue: In the Beginning.”
And take note: both begin at 10:00 a.m.
Worship time (11:00 a.m.) will also offer some very special time for the children . . . but not without the adults listening in. Then, in our narrower adult time, much of what we will be reflecting on grows out of some conversation between Jesus and his disciples in Mark 10:35-45… so you might want to check that out. But you might also take a look at Isaiah 52:13-53:12 and what is called The Fourth Song of the Servant of Yahweh. It’s one of the most misunderstood and misapplied portions in the entire Bible… and along with the Mark reading will help us to reflect on thoughts about authentic power… and the meaning of servanthood . . .
Trust that the drizzlies will have stopped by Sunday morning…
Hope to see you then,
