Christmas Worship, 2009
The images on this page are examples of Chrismons (a combination of “Christ” and “monogram”) – homemade ornaments based on ancient symbols of the Christian faith. First created in 1957 at Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, VA., Chrismons retain the sacred meaning of Christmas in the midst of its secular and commercial celebration. Chrismons should never be made for profit.

Sunday, December 13, the Third Sunday of Advent
- We’ll be decorating the tree and the sanctuary both before and after worship.
- Worship at 11:00 a.m. – our biblical narrative for the day comes from LUKE 3:1-18 and concerns defining ‘what we need to be doing’ in terms of getting at the roots of injustice and oppression. How are we raising our prophetic voice?
- The children will be having a 10:15 practice session for their part in the service the following week…

CANCELLED DUE TO WEATHER CONDITIONS – Sunday, December 20, the Fourth Sunday of Advent
- Church School and Adult Discussion will both meet at 10:00 a.m.
- Worship at 11:00 a.m. In the spirit of readings from Psalm 80:1-7, Micah 5:2-4, Hebrews 10:5-10 and especially Luke 1:39-55, readings that celebrate a God of mercy and justice, we will have some brief reflections on Our Commitments As A Community of Liberation that will include some special offerings by the children.
Thursday, December 24th, Christmas Eve
- Christmas Candlelight Communion at 8:00 p.m. “We don’t sing ‘Come SOME of ye faithful’” – we want the community to know that NO MATTER WHO you are or where you are on life’s journey YOU ARE WELCOME at St. James UCC. So it’s a good time to invite your neighbors and friends – no matter who – to join us in what will be a fairly traditional observance… but a tradition with relevance!
